FED:Opposition keeps pressure on Thomson

CANBERRA, Aug 24 AAP - The federal opposition will make a second attempt to have embattled
Labor MP Craig Thomson front parliament and defend allegations he misused a credit card
issued to him when he was a union leader.

The government has dismissed the move as another stunt.

But the coalition already has the support of one crossbencher loyal to the Gillard government.

Opposition Leader Tony Abbott says the issue is preventing the government from addressing
more serious problems.

"It is very important the matter be resolved and that this boil for the government
be lanced," he told ABC Radio on Wednesday.

"While the government is completely distracted by the Craig Thomson matter it's not
properly able to attend to the pressing problems the country faces."

The coalition failed in an attempt on Monday to have Mr Thomson front the parliament.

It will make a second attempt when the House of Representatives begins sitting ay 9am
(AEST) on Wednesday.

SA:Fears held for missing SA woman

Eds: Reissues correcting spelling of missing woman's surname, on revised police information,
in both keyword and copy.

By Tim Dornin

ADELAIDE, April 27 AAP - Police say they can't rule out foul play in the disappearance
of a 58-year-old woman from the small town of Kapunda, north of Adelaide.

Rhonda Firla, a well-known local primary school teacher, was last seen walking in the
town's main street almost a week ago.

She disappeared without taking her wallet or credit cards with her, but her mobile
phone is missing.

Detective Sergeant Simon Carpenter said Ms Firla's disappearance was out of character.

"We have some grave concerns for her safety," he said.

"We have no idea where she is. We've conducted several searches, but as yet we haven't
been able to locate her."

Sgt Carpenter said Ms Firla was involved in a minor disagreement with her husband the
day before she went missing, but that was not an issue of great concern.

"We can't rule out foul play, but we have a number of options on the table that we're
looking at," he said.

The woman's eldest son Karl recently returned from Sydney to help search for his mother,
while his younger siblings, Anna and Mark, have flown in from their homes in Munich, Germany.

Karl urged his mother to contact the family or police if she needed help.

"Mum, we're all very concerned. We'd like to know if you're okay," he said.

"We've all come home and all we would like is for you to let us know that everything is okay.

"We all love you and we miss you very much."

The woman's disappearance follows the triple murder in Kapunda of Andrew and Rose Rowe
and their 16-year-old daughter Chantelle in November last year.

Jason Alexander Downie has been charged with three counts of murder and is being held in custody.

FED:Oakeshott questions 'smear campaign'

CANBERRA, Aug 30 AAP - Independent MP Rob Oakeshott has questioned coalition tactics
after receiving a "Rambo-style" phone call from a senior Liberal.

He also wants to know whether a smear campaign reportedly being launched against him
is an attempt to destabilise his negotiations with the major parties.

Mr Oakeshott, who is in Canberra this week to continue talks, is seeking a "please
explain" from Opposition Leader Tony Abbott.

He has already received an apology from an unnamed Liberal who called claiming to be
"the Devil" when his wife answered.

It follows reports that Liberal backbencher Alby Schultz phoned and abused fellow independent
Tony Windsor, telling him to back the coalition in forming government.

Mr Oakeshott said Mr Abbott needs to come clean on whether the calls were part of a
wider Liberal strategy.

"If these are Rambo-style phone calls that I'm receiving from loose cannons, that's
fine," Mr Oakeshott told ABC Radio on Monday.

"But what is of deeper concern is ... is this a strategic move to try and destabilise
this whole process?

"If that is the game, that needs to be flushed out early."

Mr Oakeshott also pointed the finger at the Nationals over tabloid newspapers that
were "trying to run up dirt stories" on him.

Dismissing the "diversion", Mr Oakeshott wants to make a decision on who he will be
supporting by the end of this week.

He expects to meet with Prime Minister Julia Gillard later on Monday and Mr Abbott
as soon as possible, when he's planning to get a better idea of both parties' costings.

Mr Oakeshott, who has not ruled out supporting either party, said he's still hopeful
of consensus politics even if the major camps are not inclined to agree.

Fed: AWU attacks appointment of Abetz in Oppn IR role

CANBERRA, Dec 8 AAP - The appointment of Eric Abetz as opposition workplace relations
spokesman is evidence of the coalition's intention to bring back Work Choices, the Australian
Workers' Union (AWU) says.

Senator Abetz has won promotion to the key portfolio at the expense of Michael Keenan
following a reshuffle announced on Tuesday by Opposition Leader Tony Abbott.

AWU national secretary Paul Howes attacked the appointment, describing Senator Abetz
as a "long-time foot soldier in the campaign to undermine workplace rights in Australia".

"He enrolled in the army of union-haters in his university student days, and he has
never given up the ideological fight," Mr Howes said.

Mr Abbott wanted to see a return to Work Choice-style industrial relations laws in
Australia, he said.

"So, no one should be mistaken. Eric Abetz backs Tony Abbott's dream of reintroducing
large chunks of those hated laws."

Fed: Logies noms show what people really like this year: expert

By Katherine Field, National Entertainment Writer

SYDNEY, April 11 AAP - Take one look at this year's Logie nominations list and you
could be mistaken for thinking that TV viewers have suddenly changed what they like to
watch.

The nominations for the 50th Logie Awards were announced this week and were very different
to previous years.

There was a sharp move away from actors in big dramas to a focus on comedy and ABC programs.

Of the eight nominations for this year's Gold Logie for Australia's most popular personality,
three are comics and three are from the ABC - an unprecedented showing for the public
broadcaster.

Television expert, Jason Sternberg, from Queensland University of Technology (QUT),
says this year's nominations are actually a better reflection than ever of what people
like to watch.

He said that's largely due to the method of voting this year.

For the first time, voting for the nominees was opened up to the internet and not confined
to TV Week magazine.

Mr Sternberg said that having voting confined to TV week had skewed the Logies in the
past in line with what older people liked.

ABC Television's Andrew Denton, Chris Lilley and Adam Hills, and Network Ten's Rove
McManus will vie against former winners Kate Ritchie and Lisa McCune for this year's Gold
Logie.

Neighbours star Natalie Blair and All Saints veteran John Howard round out the nominees.

In previous years, the category has been dominated by actors or talk show hosts - with
the last few winners being Home and Away actor Ritchie, Blue Heelers star John Wood, talk
show host McManus and former All Saints actor Georgie Parker.

This year, there is a mix of the old and the new personalities and shows, he said.

Sternberg said internet voting had allowed the younger personalities such as Lilley
to be included.

He said it was also interesting to note that the Gold Logie nominees were generally
personalities who had ventured outside their traditional TV role.

He said that in particular Lilley, Hills, McManus and Denton had strong online presences.

Their shows had been quite interactive, with sites and features.

Lilley, in particular. His mockumentary Summer Heights High was able to be seen on
the internet and was expanded into a brand.

"Chris Lilley getting nominated through Summer Heights High that's really a multi-media
phenomena," he said.

"Adam Hills from Spicks and Specks is the same, and Rove certainly has a strong online
presence as well as involvement in other areas."

One of the other trends in this year's Logies nominations is the increase in nominations
for pay TV.

Pay TV programs such as the sports program Inside Cricket, the wine show Stuart McGill
Uncorked and dramas The King, Satisfaction and Love My Way are among nominees.

Sternberg said pay TV and the ABC allowed for much more innovation and were making
big inroads in programming.

"Australian commercial TV is so revenue driven that it's not really a space for innovation
any more," he said.

The ABC had the second most nominations of any network, behind Seven.

The Logie Awards will be announced at a ceremony at Melbourne's Crown Entertainment
Complex on May 4.

Fed: Dawn breaks at Gallipoli as thousands mark Anzac Day=2

New Zealand Foreign Minister Winston Peters painted a moving picture of the Anzac campaign,
and urged a commitment to peace.

The Anzacs, who believed they were training for deployment in France, were pitched
into an-ill conceived campaign against Turkey for which few of them were prepared, he
said.

"They were to learn that courage and natural ability could not compensate for failures
in planning, leadership and logistics," he said in remarks broadcast live in Australia.

"Under constant fire from the start, many troops were hit before even making it to shore.

"The survivors found themselves pinned down on the cruelly exposed beach, which was
soon strewn with wounded and dead."

Mr Peters urged the thousands gathered in the morning dark to remember the hardships
and deprivations the soldiers endured during the eight-month campaign on the Gallipoli
peninsula, from food shortages to snipers, disease and the constant barrage of artillery.

"The human cost of the campaign was enormous, with over half a million casualties including
130,000 dead," he said.

"In remembering the suffering and loss on both sides, let us commit ourselves to working
for a world where differences between nations can be resolved without resorting to war.

"That is the way that we can best honour the men who fought and died here."

Victorian Premier STEVE BRACKS has defended the state's Office of Police Integrity
after it inadvertently sent hundreds of sensitive police files to a private citizen.

Mr BRACKS agrees it was a major major error.

But he's told Southern Cross radio that state ombudsman GEORGE BROUWER, who also heads

Confidential files on more than 400 people were sent by the OPI to a woman in country
Victoria in May, after she complained that a policewoman had breached her privacy by accessing
her files.

Mr BROUWER has blamed the debacle on a mail clerk, and initially said the watchdog

AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 2, 2000

IBT Technologies, an e-learning enabling company, recently inked a contract with Liebert Cassidy, a California employment and labor relations law firm, to reposition their library of management and employee training workshops to the Internet.

IBT will convert Liebert Cassidy's discrimination, harassment, disability, discipline and investigation content into media-rich Web delivered e-learning that will be distributed through IBT's Knowledge Gateway(tm) Standardized Learning Communities.

The first course is "Preventing Workplace Harassment" and it will be offered in a two-fold approach. The first is geared towards employees and includes sections on identifying and preventing workplace harassment. The second course is geared towards supervisors and covers the same material as the employee course, plus includes instruction on supervisors' duties and responsibilities regarding preventing and remedying workplace harassment.

Other pending courses include: FLSA (Fair Labor Standards Act), FMLA (Family Medical Leave Act) and the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act).

"We're thrilled to have the level of expertise and regulatory training that Liebert Cassidy brings to the market," says Deborah Kaufman, co-founder and president of IBT Technologies. "Companies are faced with continuous changes in the law, making their job of assuring compliance more difficult than ever before.

"The great thing about a partner like Liebert Cassidy is that they are committed to extraordinarily accurate content with the resources to continuously update the material. This level of commitment from a content provider is the level our clients want. With the frequent changes to the law it is imperative that new regulations, as well as explanations of their impact, are distributed as quickly as possible. The Internet is the best way to do this and we look forward to more legal experts turning to Web-based training as the prime vehicle for maintaining and transporting this type of information."

"We're very excited about the possibilities of online training," explains Melanie Poturica, managing partner at Liebert Cassidy. "The goal of all of our training workshops is to provide clients with current and relevant information they can use to help them avoid potential liability in employment law and personnel matters.

"It was important for us to find the right company to partner with when it came to creating online training programs that lived up to the high-standards we demand, and that our clients have come to expect. This is our first foray into Web-based training and we chose IBT because they offered the right combination of technology, distribution and support services -- all under one roof. Plus, IBT's software can accommodate updates quickly and easily, and in the ever-changing business of employment law, that's important," says Poturica.

The content of the courses in the second module include: Privacy in the Workplace, Violence in the Workplace, Use and Abuse of Absenteeism, Legal Mandates, Avoiding and Handling Grievances.

INTERVIEW WITH SIGRID LIGNE, SECRETARY-GENERAL, EGBA : "WE EXPECT A PROPOSAL FOR A EUROPEAN REGULATORY FRAMEWORK".

Sigrid Ligne is secretary-general of the European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA), the voice of the leading online gaming operators in Europe. She believes that the need is clearly there for aacoherent and regulated approach to online gambling at European Union level.

What is the EGBA's view of the new instances of openness in the EU member states?

More and more member states have evolved in recent months from a monopolistic or prohibitionist approach towards a regulated approach based on a national licensing system. This is a move in the right direction but it is still inadequate. Drawing up national rules for a sector that by its very nature is cross-border in scope will not represent an effective response to the challenges of consumer protection and preservation of law and order. Some of these new regulations even run counter to EU law and competition rules and are being disputed at national or Community level. Lastly, the cost of such fragmentation and duplication of national requirements is particularly high. A study carried out by PricewaterhouseCoopers in 2010 shows that the administrative and technical costs of obtaining and keeping a licence in France amount to 8.7 million for a European operator who is already licensed in one or more EU member states. The adoption of a European approach is therefore essential.

What do you expect of the green paper?

The consultation is expected to identify the real challenges in terms of consumer protection and fraud prevention, which we welcome. What we expect of the Commission upon conclusion of the consultation is a proposal for a regulatory framework for online gambling, as it has done for other sectors that are intrinsically highly regulated, such as telecommunications or pharmaceuticals. In parallel, the Commission must play its role as guardian of the treaty, and vigorously and systematically continue to open infringement cases against member states that continue to infringe EU law.

How can criminal abuse or public health concerns inherent to online gambling, be halted?

Abuse is in fact easier to control online than in traditional networks but this requires a coherent and regulated approach at European Union level. In a regulated environment, online gambling offers a high level of traceability and transparency. Thanks in particular to electronic payments, every transaction leaves a digital fingerprint'. The internet offers fraud prevention and detection opportunities that are hard to reproduce in physical gambling establishments, as the Commission confirmed in its green paper.

As for the problem of addiction, this risk is present in all forms of games of chance, whether these are played at establishments or online. The European online gambling sector is particularly in the lead on responsible gambling and gives players a wide range of online tools to help prevent or limit these risks. These include, for instance, activation by the player of exclusion, cool-off or risk limitation options.

What are the criteria for your code of professional ethics?

You are probably referring to the EGBA standards adopted by our association in 2007. This is a list of rules and technical specifications that we impose on all our members and that is audited annually to guarantee that all our rules on responsible gambling are being complied with in full. This list is updated regularly to include advances in research and to implement the most effective technical solutions for the protection of minors, fraud prevention and protection of vulnerable players. These standards of course stand alongside binding legal rules and in no case replace them. We are currently in the process of updating this list to take account of the 134 responsible gambling measures adopted recently in the framework of the European Committee for Standardisation (CEN).

Every story has a message that deserves to be heard; THE CASE AGAINST BANNING BOOKS.(SERIES: VOICES: BY FOR AND ABOUT TEENS)(CNY)

Byline: Christina Lee Contributing writer

Every citizen of the United States has freedom of speech and freedom of the press, as stated in the First Amendment of our nation's Constitution. These freedoms are obstructed when a book is banned.

I am an avid reader. I firmly believe that every story has a message, and that message deserves to be heard. Some may argue books that are "challenged" are inappropriate, but this begs the question: What gives someone else the right to decide what is appropriate for me? Who are you to tell me what I can read?

The media has a huge impact on the lives of adolescents and teenagers. In a world where television and the Internet are invading young people's minds with the wrong ideas, it is important that books are there to provide morals for them. By banning books, we risk ridding a positive influence on the lives of young adults in our community.

Some of the most challenged books are filled with controversy, yet they are considered classics. Why is that? Because the ideas found within them are powerful

and have meaning.

Tacitus said, "A desire to resist oppression is implanted in the nature of man." I encourage you to keep reading and stand up for the messages that we take from books. Books should never be banned.

Danish students get taste of life in Naperville.(News)

Byline: Justin Kmitch jkmitch@dailyherald.com

Educators more and more are turning to technology to break down barriers to connect students with other parts of the world.

Some teachers turned back the clock in Naperville this week, though, and used a very familiar piece of technology -- the airplane -- to connect students with their peers 4,100 miles away in Denmark.

Two teachers and 19 students from Copenhagen open Gymnasium, a Danish high school focused on creating a study environment that transcends the walls of the classroom, arrived in Naperville late Saturday to learn about American politics, families and youth culture and create a partnership with students and faculty at Naperville Central High School.

After spending two days shadowing Central students through classes and staying in their homes, the Danish students were ready to declare two things: "Lou Malnati's pizza is delicious" and "Everything in America is huge."

"Everything is bigger here. Your cars are huge, your homes are huge, your roads are huge," said Stella Cunane, 19. "And your school is huge. There are so many students here. How do you keep track of them?"

Copenhagen open has 700 students and 75 teachers compared to the more than 3,000 students and nearly 300 staff members at Central.

During their visit, the Danish students gave a presentation about their country and school to students from Central's World and Classical Languages Department and interviewed AP Government students about our government and youth culture.

Copenhagen student Andrea Kristensen, 18, said she and her fellow students caught a glimpse of young Americans expressing their patriotic beliefs Sunday night in Chicago and were a bit disappointed.

"We saw a celebration in (Grant) Park after the death of (Osama) bin Laden and you would never see that celebration of a death in the streets of Denmark," Kristensen said. "We were surprised. We think that was too much, just too much of a lack of respect."

The visitors did, however appreciate the sense of community and school pride shown by Central students and staff.

"It has been a great trip with so many wonderful and helpful people," Cunane said. "Perhaps they can visit us some day and learn more about us."

This week's visit to Naperville was not the first for the Danish school or its staff.

"Our partnership started about a year ago, when Navina Ostergaard, a Spanish and English teacher at Copenhagen open, contacted us," said Naperville Central Spanish teacher Ellen Spitalli."Their school had heard of Naperville Central through our PE program and math teacher David Sladkey's Brain Breaks book and webpage."

Last spring, some students at Copenhagen open communicated in Spanish via email with Central students. This past fall, Ostergaard's Spanish class worked with Spitalli's Spanish IV classes on a project.

"The Danish students uploaded to Google Documents some PowerPoint presentations and videos that they had made on the topic of the environment in Latin America," Spitalli said. "My students read and viewed the materials and made comments to the Danish students using an Internet school networking site that we were piloting at the time. Then, some of my students videotaped their presentations on an artist, during our unit on Spain and Spanish art, and uploaded them to YouTube. The Danish students were able to view them and give their feedback, in Spanish, also through YouTube."

Following that project, Ostergaard came to Naperville with another teacher and two students to see what Naperville was like in preparation for the larger visit that is taking place now.

The Danish visitors and their teachers will remain in Naperville through Saturday when they will return to Copenhagen and prepare several presentations for their peers.

Hannover Re Acquires Reinsurance Portfolio from Scottish Re.

HANNOVER, Germany -- Hannover Re has reached agreement with Scottish Re (US) on the acquisition of a reinsurance portfolio as part of a transaction.

The acquired portfolio covers the mortality risk under term life and endowment policies that were reinsured by Scottish Re in the underwriting years 2000 to 2003. The business is 100% assumed by Hannover Re with effect from 1 January 2011.

The business is expected to generate an annual premium volume of around USD 80 million. Hannover Re is to assume the technical liabilities associated with the portfolio and will in return receive the necessary assets from Scottish Re.

'This transaction superbly complements our acquisition of the ING life reinsurance portfolio in 2009 and further strengthens our traditional US life business', Ulrich Wallin, Chief Executive Officer of Hannover Re, emphasised.

The transaction, which is expected to close in May 2011, still requires regulatory approval and is therefore subject to the customary reservations.

Hannover Re, with a gross premium of around EUR 11 billion, is the third-largest reinsurer in the world. It transacts all lines of non-life and life and health reinsurance. It maintains business relations with more than 5,000 insurance companies in about 150 countries. Its worldwide network consists of more than 100 subsidiaries, branch and representative offices on all five continents with a total staff of roughly 2,200. The rating agencies most relevant to the insurance industry have awarded Hannover Re very strong insurer financial strength ratings (Standard & Poor's AA- 'Very Strong' and A.M. Best A 'Excellent').

The American Red Cross Commits $10 Million to Assist China Earthquake Survivors.

The American Red Cross is prepared to provide $10 million to support relief efforts following the devastating 7.9 magnitude earthquake in China's Sichuan province. This contribution will assist the Red Cross Society of China, whose employees and volunteers have been helping survivors since the earthquake struck on Monday, May 12. According to the latest reports, tens of thousands of people have been killed, and many more are missing or trapped by debris (see also American Red Cross).

"Already we have seen a great outpouring of concern and support from across the U.S. for those whose lives were shattered by this disaster," said David Meltzer, senior vice president, International Services for the American Red Cross. "We are working closely with our international partners, including the Chinese Red Cross, to provide vital assistance to those in need."

The $10 million will go toward the preliminary appeal by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, on May 15, calling for a total of $19.3 million. The appeal will support the relief operations through the purchase and distribution of supplies, coordination of relief efforts, and deployment of staff to the affected area. Together, the appeal aims to assist approximately 100,000 people over the next 12 months.

The Chinese Red Cross is a very strong organization with extensive experience responding to disasters in China. Hundreds of volunteers, including trained medical staff and relief experts, are currently helping survivors. They are distributing aid and setting up tents for people who have lost their homes. The American Red Cross has long history of working in partnership with the Red Cross Society of China, including this year's severe winter storms.

The American Red Cross will continue to weigh additional support options, which may include additional financial support, relief supplies or expertise. Given the scope of the disaster, the full picture of the disaster may take several more days to become clear.

You can help those affected by countless crises around the world each year by making a financial gift to the American Red Cross International Response Fund, which will provide immediate relief and long-term support through supplies, technical assistance and other support to help those in need. Call 1-800-RED CROSS or 1-800-257-7575 (Spanish). Contributions to the International Response Fund may be sent to your local American Red Cross chapter or to the American Red Cross International Response Fund, P.O. Box 37243, Washington, DC 20013. Internet users can make a secure online contribution by visiting www.redcross.org. The American Red Cross honors donor intent. NO FRIEND OF THE CONSTITUTION CLINTON'S WORDS, ACTS FLY IN THE FACE OF HIS PLEDGE TO PROTECT FIRST AMENDMENT.(MAIN)

Byline: ROBYN E. BLUMNER

When Bill Clinton took the presidential oath of office, promising to ``preserve, protect and defend the Constitution,'' he must have had his fingers crossed. He may know the Constitution, but he certainly doesn't let it get in his way.

The most recent example is his crusade against liquor advertising. The President called on the Federal Communication Commission to investigate the effects of liquor advertising on children, implying he may use the power of his office to get the industry to quit hawking their product over the airwaves.

Although he stopped short of calling for an advertising ban, he leveled a veiled threat by saying it is time to ``move urgently to save parents, young people, and our nation from the unavoidable bad consequences of liquor advertising on television.'' One thing he didn't mention was the First Amendment.

This new speech battle comes on the heels of a number of high-profile criticisms of Clinton's constitutional record.

In a recent New York Times commentary, noted civil liberties lawyer Floyd Abrams presented a case study of Clinton's utter disdain for the First Amendment. And the libertarian CATO Institute just issued a policy analysis, titled ``Dereliction of Duty: The Constitutional Record of President Clinton,'' that is replete with examples of Clinton and his Justice Department riding roughshod over some of our most precious freedoms.

For Clinton, a former constitutional law professor and Democrat (although some would say that is former too), his willingness to be guided by political expediency alone is just his idea of winning the game. To those of us who put him in office, it is nothing short of ideological treason.

In addition to his disregard for free speech, Clinton has supported warrantless searches of public housing residences, drug testing of high school athletes without any suspicion of their drug use, and the use of roving FBI wiretaps without a court order.

Clinton has signed into law legislation that strips the courts of jurisdiction to hear claims of rights violations by immigrants and prisoners, both marginal populations with virtually no political power.

And his Justice Department argued before the Supreme Court that a criminal defendant could be sentenced for crimes of which he was acquitted.

One would be hard-pressed to find a fundamental constitutional right that Clinton has not attacked either legislatively or in the courts.

However, this creeping shift of power from the people to the President is not by willful design but by benign neglect. His policies are made by situational response without regard for principles. Combine this with Clinton's innate paternalism and the result is devastating for freedom.

In addition to his strike against liquor ads, the Clinton Justice Department has sought to limit the speech of beer companies. Appearing before the Supreme Court, government attorneys defended federal regulations prohibiting the display of alcohol content on beer cans with the feeble argument that people would be encouraged to drink beer with high alcohol content if such information were available.

The court didn't buy it. Justice John Paul Stevens cautioned, ``The Constitution is most skeptical of supposed state interests that seek to keep people in the dark for what the government believes to be their own good.''

Clinton picks his battles by targeting despised groups and industries. It's no surprise, then, that tobacco companies top that list.

In 1995, he demanded regulations limiting magazine cigarette ads to black-and-white text where children are part of the readership, and prohibiting tobacco companies from using brand names in the sponsorship of sporting events. Such summary power over speech, even over that of bad-guy tobacco, is shiveringly excessive.

This year he went after pornographers, with the Justice Department arguing before the Supreme Court that legislation censoring the Internet to protect children from indecency was constitutional.

The administration vigorously defended this repressive law even though the high court has consistently struck down censorship schemes which, in the name of protecting children, condemn adults to reading only what is suitable for youngsters.

But this ``child-watch'' moralism has pervaded Clinton's tenure. He strong-armed the television industry into establishing a rating system for his V-chip program. Then he forced all television manufacturers to be accessories to his scheme by having Congress legislate the V-chip protocol for all new sets.

Rather than use persuasion, Clinton exploits his executive regulatory powers to their fullest. When the President called for more educational television for children, the FCC responded with new regulations that required stations to carry a certain quota of such government-approved programming.

And the administration has continued to support radio broadcast restrictions that limit ``indecent'' speech to between midnight and 6 a.m. so that no children may inadvertently hear one of George Carlin's seven dirty words.

Clinton seems to think he is not only mayor of every town but parent of every child. A new term should be added to our lexicon: An ``Arkansas Presidency'' is one that compensates for its general lack of direction with an overabundance of simplistic and nosy directives, doing more damage to freedom than good for the country. Like Mother Goose with police powers.

Clinton is a perfect example of why those of us concerned about liberty have to be most on our guard when ``friends'' occupy seats of power. Since he entered the White House, that seat is looking more and more like a throne.

PLC Network Solutions announces letter of intent to acquire an international VoIP Provider: TMXO, SONS, XING, YHOO, BIDU.

M2 PRESSWIRE-10 November 2005-SessionsIR.com: PLC Network Solutions announces letter of intent to acquire an international VoIP Provider: TMXO, SONS, XING, YHOO, BIDU(C)1994-2005 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD

RDATE:10112005

Stocks in the News: Trimax Corporation (OTC: TMXO), Sonus Networks Incorporated (NASDAQ: SONS), Qiao Xing Universal Telephone Incorporated (NASDAQ: XING), Yahoo Incorporated (NASDAQ: YHOO), Baidu.com Incorporated (NASDAQ: BIDU)

Trimax Corporation (OTC: TMXO), through its wholly owned subsidiary PLC Network Solutions Inc. ("PLC"), a Broadband Over Powerline communications company, announced that it has signed an letter of intent to acquire Beamax Telecom Inc. of Montreal, Quebec. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed. Beamax is an international provider of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services. Not only will the acquisition combine the synergies and bundled services of both companies, it will give PLC significant market traction, a great team and an additional base of operations for deployment through most of Canada and the US. The adoption of VoIP Communications accelerated in 2004 to approximately 8 million home users worldwide. By 2009, industry experts anticipate this number to grow to over 58 million.

Sonus Networks Inc. (NASDAQ: SONS) stock fell Wednesday, a day after the communications-technology specialist reported a third-quarter loss. Chelmsford, Mass.-based Sonus, which makes networking systems for Internet phone services, said its results were affected by delayed orders from two of its largest customers. Investors didn't like the sound of that report, and sent Sonus shares down 83 cents, or 16 percent, to $4.23 on the Nasdaq Stock Market. Sonus said it lost $2.7 million, or 1 cent a share, compared with a profit of $10.3 million, or 4 cents a share, in the same period a year ago.

Qiao Xing Universal Telephone Inc. (NASDAQ: XING), one of China's biggest makers of cell phones and other telecommunications gear, on Wednesday forecast 2005 net income will reach $24 million, up 60 percent from last year's reported profit. The company said it has recently won orders worth $70 million from distributors of pocket personal computer mobile phone handsets in China, and predicted it would receive many more orders in the future. Qiao Xing shares added 43 cents, or 6.9 percent, to $6.66 on the NASDAQ.

The entrepreneur who runs Yahoo Inc.'s (NASDAQ: YHOO) China-based Web portal has announced a new strategy based on promoting the site as a search engine, saying he's ready to spend heavily in a battle with Chinese-language search leader Baidu.com (NASDAQ: BIDU) Wednesday's announcement by Jack Ma, chief executive officer of Alibaba.com, highlighted the intense rivalry in China's market of more than 100 million Internet users. Alibaba took control of Yahoo's China sites in a deal in August, in which Yahoo bought 40 percent of the Chinese company. Alibaba unveiled a redesigned, simplified Chinese-language Yahoo site that focuses on a search box and drops entertainment listings and other features of the earlier site.

Wednesdays Close: The market found its footing after lunch, taken higher by some broad-based buying efforts. Though the indices managed to close with modest gains, they were well pared during the final half hour of trading. Lacking much market-moving news, the corporate and economic fronts left investors without any strong catalysts. The EIA's latest energy inventory report sat center stage, but had little effect on overall trading, except for within the Energy sector, that is. Much better than expected builds in crude and gasoline initially sparked a sharp decline in crude futures contracts; in turn, the Energy sector fell to a market-dragging loss. The unexpected draw-down in distillate supply perhaps stole the focus, however, and reversed the sector's course. The paring of its loss lifted a lid off of the indices, but its late return to the red took the market back down.

Old, familiar political faces welcome at convention.

Byline: Monica Davey

LOS ANGELES _ Every now and then, an older, unforgettable face floats by in the convention hall, between the clusters of young politicians, young journalists and young movie stars in this city of youth.

These are the ghosts of Democratic conventions past, people like Geraldine Ferraro, Walter Mondale, Michael Dukakis, Ann Richards, Jimmy Carter, Mario Cuomo and more.

Once, they held top billings at their own conventions. Some even made the defining moments that sealed a convention in history: Ferraro made her mark as the first female vice presidential candidate; Mondale gambled (perhaps unwisely) and announced that, as president, he would raise taxes; Richards, the former Texas governor, famously jabbed that President George Bush was born with a "silver foot in his mouth."

They have faded now into political memory, moving on to jobs in consulting and teaching and _ most frequently, it seemed this week _ offering their perspectives on the TV political talk circuit.

Most of them no longer wield the same influence within their party, but they win as many nods of recognition from delegates here as the Hollywood stars get. Besides, most have been coming to these conventions every four years for their entire adult lives. Coming here is coming home.

"I like to see them," said Larry Sabato, a political scientist from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. "Do they carry influence? No. But it doesn't matter. They remind all of us that there's life after politics. Politics, you know, is always dynamic. One thing about being in Hollywood _ you can see that the star machine is eating up their stars faster than we do in the political world, thank goodness."

Once central at the convention podium, these politicians now are crucial to another circuit. They kept a dizzying pace on CNN, which in four days, brought forward Mondale, then Dukakis, then Cuomo. Richards, meanwhile, declined to be interviewed by the Tribune, her aides said, because she had committed to regular analyses this week on CNN.

Former President Carter received a special tribute in the convention hall. He declined, though, to give a speech. In an interview with CNN, he said he was happy to be in L.A. "Some of the conventions have not been as eager to see me present," Carter said.

Delegates said they liked seeing the party's older stars, in part, because they had seen few truly defining moments at this year's convention. The former leaders reminded them of drama from the past: Tom Hayden's anti-war protests in 1968, Barbara Jordan's stirring keynote address in 1976, Cuomo's dramatic speech about President Ronald Reagan in 1984.

"A shining city is perhaps all the president sees from the portico of the White House and the veranda of his ranch, where everyone seems to be doing well," Cuomo said 16 years ago. "There is despair, Mr. President, in faces you never see, in the places you never visit in your shining city."

This year, for the first time in 20 years, Cuomo, the former governor of New York, was not at the Democratic convention. He was at his law office in New York. He said he didn't want to get in the way of his son, Andrew Cuomo, the HUD secretary.

"I kind of miss it," Mario Cuomo said from New York. "But two Cuomos would be a glut. I do miss being in there fighting. And trying to get Gore votes. If I were there, they'd want to do daddy and Andrew things. And that's no good for Andrew. He's way past that stage. He's better than I am at anything."

Since 1984, he has been approached hundreds of times by people who recalled the famous speech, Cuomo said. At the time, though, he didn't think it was that big a deal. In fact, he insists, he didn't really

want to give it. "I never have liked the podium frankly."

"It was really just substantive," he said. "It wasn't poetry. I didn't bite my lip. It wasn't a matter of drama or even humor. It was stuff that people were interested in."

Cuomo is watching this year on TV. As it turns out, he said, it's easier to see from there. The views, too, are better.

Hayden, of Chicago 7 fame, meanwhile, was watching the convention from the nearly same perspective he had in 1968. Reached on his cellular phone on Thursday, Hayden, now a California state senator, was standing in the midst of a large protest in Los Angeles' garment district. Asked how he felt about his roles, then and now, as an icon in politics, Hayden got angry. "It's very tiring to get asked that question again and again for years. If anything will drive me out of politics, it will be one more reporter asking me about my role."

What matters, Hayden continued, was the protest movement, the poor treatment of people crossing over the U.S. borders, the undue influence of money and corporations in politics.

Some things, it seems, change less with time.
