Every citizen of the United States has freedom of speech and freedom of the press, as stated in the First Amendment of our nation's Constitution. These freedoms are obstructed when a book is banned.
I am an avid reader. I firmly believe that every story has a message, and that message deserves to be heard. Some may argue books that are "challenged" are inappropriate, but this begs the question: What gives someone else the right to decide what is appropriate for me? Who are you to tell me what I can read?
The media has a huge impact on the lives of adolescents and teenagers. In a world where television and the Internet are invading young people's minds with the wrong ideas, it is important that books are there to provide morals for them. By banning books, we risk ridding a positive influence on the lives of young adults in our community.
Some of the most challenged books are filled with controversy, yet they are considered classics. Why is that? Because the ideas found within them are powerful
and have meaning.
Tacitus said, "A desire to resist oppression is implanted in the nature of man." I encourage you to keep reading and stand up for the messages that we take from books. Books should never be banned.
