VIC: Mining employees arrive too early for anti uranium demo
Workers at mining giant North Ltd have evaded anti-uranium protesters for a fourth day
running by arriving at their Melbourne headquarters too early for the protesters.
North Ltd spokesman STEWART MURRIHY says about 60 North staff were escorted by police to
the St Kilda Rd premises about 6.15am (AEST), but there are no protesters trying to obstruct
their passage.
Today is the final day of a four day blockade of the North office building by protesters
opposed to the building of Jabiluka uranium mine within the boundaries of the World Heritage
listed Kakadu National Park.
Violent clashes have erupted between protesters and police over two of the past three
mornings of the blockade.
Meanwhile the Herald Sun newspaper has reported the major police presence at the protest
meant the cancellation of several random breath testing operations in metropolitan Melbourne
since early last Sunday.
